DREAMS
First things first, I’m now a graduate and phew after 5yrs+ (don’t be mistaken I had no extra years) of drilling, grilling and tutoring in Africa’s most beautiful campus and currently first in Nigeria & 25th in Africa, Obafemi Awolowo University, I can confidently say I’m proud to be an alumnus of GREAT IFE and I enjoyed every bit of it, from the ALUTA to the EWA AWO(AWO’s BEANS), to the ARO, to the games I shared with my pals and a whole lot more. I couldn’t be more fulfilled. I’m glad I chose OAU over UNILAG, I don’t really think I would have learnt and developed as much as I did in IFE if I were in LAG but that’s not say that LAG ain’t a wonderful school, of course it is. My adventures in OAU are another story for another day.
I’m here for a personal retreat, trying to map out strategies for the next 2-5 years. I go on personal retreats whenever the inner voice within me tells me to and this gives me the opportunity to evaluate (where I am now), strategise for the future, celebrate myself if need be, chastise/ critise myself…………………………………the list is endless. I suggest you do same maybe for 3 days, maybe 4 or maybe a week.
While on the retreat, I’m with a number of books but the “Power of Focus” by Jack Canfield caught my attention, so , that’s the book I’m reading (you can e-mail me at ilorygold@gmail.com for a soft copy if you so desire). I suggest you read it too.
Okay, on getting to the second chapter, something caught my attention there and I was stunned at my response to that singular question/exercise at the end of the chapter. Here it is……”LIST 101 GOALS THAT YOU WISH TO ACHIEVE IN 10 YEARS????”……….why not pick a piece of paper or notebook and see how many of these goals you can come up with. At first, I thought it was a piece of cake but on setting out for the assignment was stunned at how many I could put down.
On the first day, I could only write down about 20 goals, the next day, I added another 10 goals to it and since then my brain hasn’t been able to come up with something. Then questions started pouring in, what happened????, why wasn’t I able to list 101 goals effortlessly??? I sought answers to my numerous questions, I carried out series of research before I finally came up with a solution for the problem. If you have actually tried writing down these goals and couldn’t get up to the 101 target, be not dismayed, read on and by the time you’re through with this piece, I bet you’d be able to list more than 150 goals.
Okay, here’s the missing link. The human mind is a database. It stores all sorts of thoughts, images, events and so much more. It has an unlimited storage capability but the limit of your mind is the limit of your dream and most times you can only dream about what you see, what you read or what you heard.
Now what you see, read or hear is determined by your exposure. How far have you seen??, how wide have you read or heard?? How deep have you imagined?? There is a correlation between exposure and dreams and you cannot go beyond the limits of your exposure. Imagine, you watch a documentary and you see the Burj Arab towers and you say to yourself…..how I wish I own that tower and then someone else watches another documentary where he sees a 15 storey building. They both dream of owning gigantic structures but the difference in the kind of structures they’re dreaming about is in their exposure. Maybe the second person never knew of the existence of a much more exquisite structure than that 15 storey building he had seen.
The whole point of this write-up is this, try to read wide, watch the lifestyle of the rich and famous in the world. Be interested in what makes them thick, what assets and luxuries do these people own????? Let your mind feast on these things in your spare time and you’d be amazed at your own dreaming capability……….there would be no limit to what you dream of achieving in life.
Three steps forward and one step back equals TWO steps FORWARD. I hope to see you at the top……

ME IN PERSPECTIVE
Actually, I think there would be a lot of us out there and guess what we are….”we are children of the wind”. We detest commitments (in relationships) for now, we hate being tied down to one person for so long, we hate stagnancy, we love change so much and we like going on in life knowing that there are actually people out there who really care for us and love us the way we are.
But is there a problem with us?? Definitely not, Wole has assured a whole lot of us out there that there is not a single problem with us ( I don’t know if he’s one of us, guess you can ask him about that). I think for every man out there, there are women and men simply pick a woman from that distinct sect that pleases them, some men even go on to pick more than one (called Polygamy).
But for us “children of the wind”, we have our match(es). They are called “Wind Catchers”. I hear wind catching isn’t something you learn, I hear it is inborn and as it is with any other talent or skill, it is developed even further with time.
This has given me some consolation, that someday, somehow, somewhere, that “wind catcher” of mine would come and catch this “drifting” wind of mine. I hope I would be able to recognize her when she comes along and that she would be much more than I am expecting.
I also hope it comes much sooner than am expecting so that this torrent wind of mine doesn’t break any more hearts than it has already done.
Faith consists in believing when it si beyond the power of reason to believe. It is enough that a thing be possible for it to be believed. -------Voltaire

THE COMFORT ZONE TRAP
Still revelling in the wide acceptance of my last article titled "Thought for the week", I have been quite lethargic in the writing of more articles and a lot of events have overtaken the birth of this piece, but i guess the delivery time for it is now. I hope it gains the same wide acceptance and criticism as the last article. This article is more of a wake up call, a call to action for as many as might come in contact with it.
I am a kind of person who always strive to improve on his current status/standing/level ( no matter what that status might be). I dream higher than yesterday, the previous year or the year before that and i have had a majority of my dreams come through and this has been a major propeller for more. I have come to realise that everybody in life live in different stratas/zones and some strive to improve on their current standing while others tend to down in a particular zone, not seeking any
improvement whatsoever. These category of people (who seek no further improvement) are said to be in their "comfort zone". This zone thus forms the subject of discuss in this article.
The comfort zone is that situation/standing/level where one becomes so placid and comfortable" thus seeking no further personal development. Change is that which humans dread the most, yet it is the only constant thing in life. Everyone seeks a change of status, a change of lifestyle, a change of jobs etc but as some changes may not be forth coming when we expect it, we become satisfied with the present situation of thing (no matter how good or bad it is).
To me, a man that doesn't dream is dead while living. As young, fertile and vibrant minds, we have to exercise our minds regularly and guard against complacency. There is nothing impossible, as mpossibility is that limit that we place on our minds by ourselves. Everyday is a blank cheque waiting to be filled in with whatever we wish and we are only given a single cheque per day.
Unfortunately, people don't even make use of these blank cheques at all, the cheques accumulate but the sad news is that the cheque can only be used on the day it was issued. Not filling these cheques means that you're satisfied with where you are ......you're in your "comfort zone".............its a zone of stagnancy, no improvement, lethargy. While there is a world of difference between greediness and upward mobility, as one is positive while the other is negative, as the former is never satisfied while the latter is that which is referred to in the quote " a journey of a thousand leagues begins with a single step", it is pertinent to note that in whatever situation we find ourselves, there's always room for improvement.
Every great thing starts at conceptualisation, that is, visualising what you want/where you want to be. The mind is thus that ground where seeds are to be sown. It is the proverbial "drawing board", where we go to plan while asking ourselves soul searching questions on the way out of the comfort zone...these questions include:
THE WHY??? why are you where you are presently..
THE WHAT?? what led to being in the present situation that you are in and what can done to remedy the situation.
THE HOW?? How do you move from where you are to where you want to be( that dreamland
of yours).does it mean, you'd change jobs, get more certificates??? It is also good to seek out counsel from others who have gone ahead of you to find out how they did it.
THE WHEN??? As there's no mortgage for time, the answer to this question has always been NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Take that bold step, to improve yourself, to move out of that comfort zone of yours, to be someone NOW!!, to add value to yourself NOW!!, to learn a new word NOW!!, to be a better person NOW!!, to make someone smile NOW!!, to ........
As that NIKE slogan says, JUST DO IT!!!!!
See you at the top.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
“I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by CONSCIOUS endeavor”
---Henry David Thoreau
I stumbled on this quote earlier today and had a nudge to make mincemeat of it. I had taken stock of happenings in my life, most of which I cannot share here, and found it difficult, if not impossible to disprove it. I actually dint set out to, anyway. The statement is uncontestable.
A few days back, I was watching a documentary on how to get what one wants and get it fast. Its actually a secret (or so they said). The summary of the whole show was that man could consciously call whatever he wants to existence. If you want a copy of the documentary, you can mail me for it but I must warn you it’s a real life changer.
Back to business, man is a product of HIMSELF. You remain the captain of your ship, the CEO of your company, the ultimate decision maker is you. NO-ONE ELSE BUT YOU. The earlier you realize this the better it is for you. Other factors such as the society, friends, spouse etc just come into play to influence you in whatever decisions you make or are about to make. I have learnt within the few years I’ve lived on earth, that whatever a man wants is always a question of how bad he wants it(PASSION). While there are things that are just infatuations (these are temporary), there are others that are ingrained on the mind and the latter, more often than not come into existence. Even the Holy Book says “If you have faith you can move mountains”. Lets do a little mental exercise here. Close your eyes, take a good mental picture of where you are now {I don’t mean the physical building you are in, I mean the “level” you are materially, financially, educationally,……………fill in the blank space urself}.
Now take a walk down memory lane @ events that have led you to where you are. Do you see any correlation??? Okay, I guess you would fit into any of these 3 categories below:
Ø First category of people are those that I refer to as the “do nothing” group. To them, they are here to watch the gallery. They do not make any conscious effort to elevate their lives. They forget that life is all about decisions and that making no decision is also a decision in itself, that there are no fences to sit on when it comes to the wall of decisions, that they have made no decision means that someone else has made the decision for them (either consciously or unconsciously). These set of people don’t dream of themselves becoming someone of envy to others in the society. They see the wealthy man as cunning. They see wealth as something impossible. Theirs is a very sorry case. For to alter their lives, they must change their mode of thinking. The truth is some people do not even know they fall into such category, that’s the sorriest part of it all.
Ø Second category of people are those who wish their lives were changed. These people see a car and say “how I wish I had that car” and it ends there for them. They just wish and do nothing about their wish. The good thing about this people is not the fact that they have a vision(of course, they don’t) but the fact that at least they can SEE and that’s a plus, it’s a starting point.
Ø The third category of people are those who know “THE SECRET” of getting what one wants. They know that getting to the top is not by accident. They know the value of dreaming and appreciate the fact that dreams do come through by conscious endeavor. They have tried it so many times and it has never for once failed them. Theirs have always been to become obsess with what they want that they don’t even know when it arrives. They are truly the movers and shakers of this world. They dream the impossible and bring it to reality. They are the ones category 1 stare at and category 2 look up to……………the world is their.
The good news, though, is that , no matter the category you fall into (hope you have discovered yours now), there’s always room for improvement (category 3) and room for change (categories 1 & 2). With emphasis on categories 1 & 2, the kind of change we’re talking about is that “only comparable to the whirlwind that swoop America leading to the election of the first black president, Barack Obama……………, like Nelson Mandela had in freeing his people from apartheid…………..those are the kind of change we’re talking about here………………the desire, the passion……….
The truth is as long as we are in this world, we hold the pen of our lives and write whatever we wish (poverty /prosperity…..sickness/health) with it. I would end with my first rule of life, DREAM UNTIL IT BECOMES AN OBSESSION. Go to the extent of having pictures (vivid pictures) of whatever it is you want, daydream about it, talk about it, call it as though they were already yours because WHATEVER THE MIND CAN CONCIEVE IT CAN ACHIEVE. This is the conscious endeavor with which men have over the years elevated their lives.
Keep dreaming until your EUREKA moment arrives.
GOLDENBOI.
